Hybridization and introgression have been suggested by previous workers as important factors in the evolution of the southeastern azaleas. However, because of high levels of intraspecific variation and lack of intensive sampling, documentation of this phenomenon has been difficult. We investigated a population of azaleas on Stone Mountain, Georgia, composed of Rhododendron flammeum, R. canescens, and their interspecific hybrids. After analysis of chloroplast DNA, we found evidence of extensive localized cytoplasmic introgression into R. flammeum. Many individuals in the sample population that are morphologically indistinguishable from R. flammeum possess the chloroplast genome of R. canescens. This suggests that some of the observed variation in some populations of R. flammeum may be due to past introgression from R. canescens. 相似文献

It is hypothesized that social networks facilitate transmission of the hepatitis C virus (HCV). We tested for association between HCV phylogeny and reported injecting relationships using longitudinal data from a social network design study. People who inject drugs were recruited from street drug markets in Melbourne, Australia. Interviews and blood tests took place three monthly (during 2005–2008), with participants asked to nominate up to five injecting partners at each interview. The HCV core region of individual isolates was then sequenced and phylogenetic trees were constructed. Genetic clusters were identified using bootstrapping (cut-off: 70%). An adjusted Jaccard similarity coefficient was used to measure the association between the reported injecting relationships and relationships defined by clustering in the phylogenetic analysis (statistical significance assessed using the quadratic assignment procedure). 402 participants consented to participate; 244 HCV infections were observed in 238 individuals. 26 genetic clusters were identified, with 2–7 infections per cluster. Newly acquired infection (AOR = 2.03, 95% CI: 1.04–3.96, p = 0.037, and HCV genotype 3 (vs. genotype 1, AOR = 2.72, 95% CI: 1.48–4.99) were independent predictors of being in a cluster. 54% of participants whose infections were part of a cluster in the phylogenetic analysis reported injecting with at least one other participant in that cluster during the study. Overall, 16% of participants who were infected at study entry and 40% of participants with newly acquired infections had molecular evidence of related infections with at least one injecting partner. Likely transmission clusters identified in phylogenetic analysis correlated with reported injecting relationships (adjusted Jaccard coefficient: 0.300; p<0.001). We present evidence for a dimorphic life cycle in the vacuolate sulfide-oxidizing bacteria that appears to involve the attachment of a spherical Thiomargarita-like cell to the exteriors of invertebrate integuments and other benthic substrates at methane seeps. The attached cell elongates to produce a stalk-like form before budding off spherical daughter cells resembling free-living Thiomargarita that are abundant in surrounding sulfidic seep sediments. The relationship between the attached parent cell and free-living daughter cell is reminiscent of the dimorphic life modes of the prosthecate Alphaproteobacteria, but on a grand scale, with individual elongate cells reaching nearly a millimeter in length. Abundant growth of attached Thiomargarita-like bacteria on the integuments of gastropods and other seep fauna provides not only a novel ecological niche for these giant bacteria, but also for animals that may benefit from epibiont colonization. 相似文献

We present 33 families in which a pericentric inversion of chromosome 10 is segregating. In addition, we summarise the data
on 32 families in which an apparently identical inv(10) has been reported in the literature. Ascertainment was through prenatal
diagnosis or with a normal phenotype in 21/33 families. In the other 12 families, probands were ascertained through a wide
variety of referral reasons but in all but one case (a stillbirth), studies of the family showed that the reason for referral
was unrelated to the chromosome abnormality. There has been, to our knowledge, no recorded instance of a recombinant chromosome
10 arising from this inversion and no excess of infertility or spontaneous abortion among carriers of either sex. We propose
that inv(10)(p11.2q21.2) can be regarded as a variant analogous to the pericentric inversion of chromosome 2(p11q13). We conclude
that prenatal chromosome analysis is not justified for inv(10) carriers. In addition, family investigation of carrier status
is not warranted in view of the unnecessary concern this may cause parents and other family members.

Abstract The functional significance of charged amino acids of the anion-selective porin Omp34 from Acidovorax delafieldii was investigated by means of conductance measurements. Chemical modification of Lys and Arg as well as titration of charges by adjusting the pH value revealed that positively charged amino acid residues determine the major functional properties of the porin. The cellular energy and biomass demands of cancer drive a complex dynamic between uptake of extracellular FAs and their de novo synthesis. Given that oxidation of de novo synthesized FAs for energy would result in net-energy loss, there is an implication that FAs from these two sources must have distinct metabolic fates; however, hitherto, all FAs have been considered part of a common pool. To probe potential metabolic partitioning of cellular FAs, cancer cells were supplemented with stable isotope-labeled FAs. Structural analysis of the resulting glycerophospholipids revealed that labeled FAs from uptake were largely incorporated to canonical (sn-) positions on the glycerol backbone. Surprisingly, labeled FA uptake also disrupted canonical isomer patterns of the unlabeled lipidome and induced repartitioning of n-3 and n-6 PUFAs into glycerophospholipid classes. These structural changes support the existence of differences in the metabolic fates of FAs derived from uptake or de novo sources and demonstrate unique signaling and remodeling behaviors usually hidden from conventional lipidomics. 相似文献
